Real Women

How to make me go from zero to pissed off in less than 1 second … post a photo of a woman (any woman) and caption it with “this is what a REAL woman looks like.”

Excuse me?

So, because I don’t look like the example woman, I’m not a woman? How sensitive of you.

I realize that generally the person’s point is that the stick-thin, PhotoShopped, completely unrealistic woman is not reasonable, but do you REALLY need to state this in a way that makes anyone who doesn’t fit in the mold “not a woman”?

I’m not tall, so I’m not a woman.

I’m tall, so I’m not a woman

I’m not slim, so I’m not a woman.

I have no curves, so I’m not a woman.

My BMI is 18, so I’m not a woman.

My BMI is 23, so I’m not a woman.

My BMI is 30, so I’m not a woman.

So, remember that every time you counter the anorexic model with a picture of a beautiful curvy woman and claim that this is a REAL WOMAN, you’re just doing to people like me what you say that [society, the media, Hollywood] is doing to those who don’t fit the mold: you’re putting someone else down to make your case.

In other words, you’re just like those you accuse of being your oppressors.

All women are real women. All women are beautiful.

Time …

Two days ago, upon the purchase of a little iPhone app – Yes, I bought an iPhone. Shut up. – called Sleep Cycle, I decided it was time to forcably haul myself out of this idiotic rut. And so, I’ve been getting up before 5:30 am, which is nothing short of miraculous when you consider that I’ve been getting out of bed between 7 and 8 for the last month. Continue reading →

Sew Strange

2 blocks down, 2 to go...

The diet is screwed. The sleep is screwed. Exercise is entirely missing from my life. Work’s taking over the work-life balance like a sumo vs. a waif on a teeter-totter.

And because I didn’t learn the last time (The Great Cat Incident of 2009), I decided to make life more complicated while I’m already busy and exhausted by tossing in a sewing course – in this case, Quilting 101.

Now, is this what I’d hoped? No.

You see, I bought a really, really nice sewing machine recently, so I could start a quilt. But Quilting 101 is a mandatory step for the local quilting shop before I can take anything else – and this course is done entirely by hand.

I am slow and clumsy with hand sewing, which was the point of the sewing machine …

Anyway, I’m plugging along on my table topper – a project I don’t much like because I am not a table topper kind of girl. Clutter? You want me to ADD CLUTTER to my house?! I think not!!

Here I am, sewing a way on a project that I will never use. So, I’m making it as a gift for someone (shhh!), and thus the fabric choices are with that person in mind.

Trying to think happy thoughts. I mean, who wants a gift infused with “grrr!”?

It’s worth noting

I have the urge to sew things because I want something achievable that I can walk away from a few hours later and say “look at what I accomplished!”

The result of that work is a physical thing that exists, has purpose, and has beauty.

Coding is its own high, its own challenge. But I rarely feel like it’s appreciated beyond “done.” (And worse, that it often never achieves “done”!)

With chance of rain

I went out this morning with Misha and the clouds were solid. It was even spitting.

So, we just went down the road and stared at some cows for a few minutes, then went home. It turns out we could have gone for our normal 4km, since it held off for a awhile.

Major storm warnings are on for Ontario today. We’ll see what happens.
